Rotary screw, Vane, or Reciprocating – Which type of industrial air compressor is best for your business?

Buying an industrial air compressor in Toronto can be a daunting task. With a plethora of air compressor brands available in the market, many industrial manufacturers struggle to choose the right compressor for their needs.

There are three major types of industrial air compressors – Rotary Screw, Vane, and Reciprocating compressor. Based on their characteristics and the unique benefits they offer, you can select the type of compressor that perfectly fits your requirements.

Three Types of Industrial Air Compressors

Rotary Screw Compressor: It is one of the most commonly-used positive displacement compressors, known for its internal cooling system and low maintenance. It comprises two internal rotors that rotate in the opposite direction. The air that gets trapped between the rotors is subjected to pressure within the compressor. While some rotary screw air compressors need to be lubricated using oil, some are capable of functioning without oil. These compressors are designed to operate continuously for a long period of time.

Vane Compressor: A rotating vane compressor comprises a barrel-shaped design with two openings for suction and release of air. Unlike rotary screw type, vane compressors use only a single rotor to build pressure by air streaming into the chamber. They are compact and inexpensive compared to their counterparts and thus are widely used across refrigerators and air conditioners at home.

Reciprocating Compressor: Compared to the rotary screw type, the reciprocating compressor cannot withstand continuous use and is not suitable for industrial application with heavy loads on compressors. These air compressor units have more moving components compared to rotary screws, and thus require greater lubrication for smooth functioning. They are perfect for garages and small construction projects.
