Energy Efficient Ideas - Compressed Air System Toronto and Guelph

We have some energy efficient ideas on how you can save energy on your compressed air system in Toronto and Guelph, just by putting into place some procedures at your facility.  Read to find out what sort of measures you can take to minimize your electrical bill.

1.   Clean Your Intercoolers and after coolers on a regular basis. This will maximize the heat transfer capability for energy efficiency and will minimize overheating issues with your compressor

  • Water cooled get plugged by the contaminants in the water
  • Some can be flushed if not too bad.
  • Most likely have to be scrubbed by taking out the end caps
  • Air cooled get plugged by the contaminants in the air
  • Typically can be blown clean

2.  Create an intake system that draws air from outdoors instead of the warm compressor room. The lower temperature of air means less energy is required to cool the air for the compressor to operate.

  •  Consider winter conditions when designing your system to avoid freezing & ice blockages

 3.  Ensure you do not have an Undersized Air Dryer.  Normal pressure drops with air dryer is 3-5 psi.  With an undersized air dryer, this create even higher drops.   Each 5 psi drop is like added 1 H.P. of energy costs to your system. 
4.  Research Air dryer supplier that focus on minimal pressure drops (3 or less psi drop).  Reducing this pressure drop will generate more energy savings then turning off a non-cycling dryer during hours not in use, or spending higher capital costs for a cycling or variable speed dryer that uses apparently less energy.

5.  Changing filters & elements frequently

  • Air Intake filters - intake filters get clogged with insects & particles and can decrease compressor output capacity and increase your energy costs. Make sure you change out frequently. 
  • In-line filters - change the elements frequently to avoid increased pressure drops, Consider oversized filters so that flow is not restricted as they become clogged and avoid overuse of filtration which can cause higher energy costs by the short cycling compressor

6.  Use adequate storage capacity to ensure air quality, air system stability and air system efficiency, especially when using  screw compressors.
