Becoming Familiar with Rotary Screw Air Compressors

The traditional view of an industrial air compressor in Toronto is typically a piston air compressor – a system designed to propel air into a confined space through the use of piston technology, whereupon that compressed air is collected in an air tank. This technology has been seen throughout industry for several decades and are known for their low upfront costs.

Improvements in air compressor design have occurred throughout the years, one of which can be seen in the production of rotary screw air compressors.

What Sets Rotary Screw Compressors Apart?

Instead of trapped air behind held in an air tank, rotary screw compressors utilise a pair of meshed rotors that can run continuously; serving to reduce the volume of trapped air at any particular moment. This reduction is beneficial for an abundance of air tools and appliances as it is directly related to an increased amount of compressed air available for use.

Oil-Free Rotary Screws

Detrimental effects can take place in certain production environments when oil enters the compressed air supply. In such situations an oil-free rotary screw air compressor is implemented for the production of industrial food packaging or medical oxygen.

With this uncontaminated compressed air comes a higher initial cost, this is because the oil-free system must undergo two intervals of compression compared to the one stage needed from an oil-injected rotary system.

Oil-Injected Rotary Screws

Contrary to their oil-free counterparts, oil-injected systems produce high pressure compressed air at a fraction of the time and cost. The oil is used to seal and lubricate the rotors, where it is then separated from the air and recycled back into the system. Their immediate and consistent psi and high CFM output makes them extremely lucrative in the automotive industries where oil contamination is not as stringent when compared to other sectors.
